The Rise of the Sikh Soldier-Book Launch

The Leicester Museum and Art Gallery was the setting for the launch of the new book by Gurinder Singh Mann. Participants came from across the country to hear more about the Sikh Martial Tradition.

Raj Mann (Sikh Museum Initiative) hosted the event and firstly introduced Dr Christopher Brice-commissioning editor for Helion and Company Publishing. He gave insightful views on Hugh Gough during the Anglo Sikh Wars This was followed by Dr Gurnam Singh (Akaal Channel) who stated how Sikh history was in need of being written from the Sikh perspective and how much more was needed to confront this challenge.

Next Gurinder Singh Mann, Sikh historian gave an introduction on Sikh Martial Tradition highlighting the role of the Misls, Sikh Empire and the other campaigns. This was followed by Q and A where Gurinder answered questions relating to : why the Misl period was important in Sikh History? The importance of Sikh Women and why these stories needed to be included Why were mercenaries employed in the Sikh Empire? and much more.

Mann gave insights into the role played by Jassa Singh Ahluwalia, Rani Sada Kaur, Sahib Kaur of Patiala and many other important Sikh personalities. The evening was also enriched by a display of Sikh portraits as well as a digital display by the Sikhmuseum Initiative. This was together with the display of the new book by Harinder Singh entitled “Jewels from Sikh Wisdom” Illustrated by The Singh Twins.

In attendance was Leicester City Councilors as well as members of the Royal Air Force The participants were treated to samosas and spring rolls. Mann signed copies of the books for the participants.
