The Battle of Ferozeshah was fought between 21 and 22 December 1845 between the Sikhs and the British East India Company at the village of the same name around 15 miles south-east of the Sutlej River in the Punjab. With the outcome of the battle on a knife edge and with the British forces out of ammunition, the Governor General, Lord Hardinge had ordered his state papers to be destroyed and made other preparations in case of defeat or surrender. The withdrawal of the Sikh forces by the Sikh Commanders however meant the British won the encounter despite heavy casualties. The battle was summed up by a speaker in Parliament, who called it “a high cost for a victory that was not very far removed from failure.”
