This Summer, join Essex Cultural Diversity Project for the Festival of Thetford & Punjab, marking the 125th anniversary of the death of Duleep Singh, the last Maharajah of the Punjab. The festival will be a cultural celebration, as well as an exploration of the story of Duleep Singh and his legacy.

This includes Duleep Singh’s family, the political and cultural context of the time he was living, and how this has influenced Thetford and the surrounding area today. It is also a chance to further explore the under-appreciated links between Thetford and the Punjab due to this shared heritage.

Duleep Singh Special Exhibition

Featuring Casualty of War: A Portrait of Maharajah Duleep Singh
A new exhibition highlighting the story of Duleep Singh and his family, launched as part of the Festival of Thetford & Punjab at Ancient House. Find out about the museum’s connections with the last Maharajah of the Punjab, and see the Casualty of War portrait by the renowned female Sikh artists, The Singh Twins. This beautiful painting is on loan from National Museums Scotland especially for the Festival, and captures the story of Maharajah Duleep Singh as the last ruler of the Sikh Empire, deposed from the throne and exiled to Britain.

7th July: Sikh Relics and Artefacts:From the past to the technological future
With Gurinder Singh Mann and Taranjit Singh( Sikh Museum Initiative)

All are welcome to this lecture, which takes you on a fascinating journey through the rich relics of the Sikh Empire, from the court of Maharajah Ranjit Singh through to the artefacts of his progeny including Maharajah Duleep Singh. The lecture will showcase how new technologies can be used to showcase relics through 3D modelling, 3D printing and augmented reality. You will also find out more about the world’s first Sikh Online Museum funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Gurinder Singh Mann is an historian and Oxford University Published author. He is Director of the Sikh Museum Initiative. He has recently curated the successful exhibition: Anglo Sikh Wars: Battles, Treaties and Relics (2016-2017) at Newarke Houses Museum, Leicester and was featured on the BBC show Celebrity Antiques Roadtrip.

Taranjit Singh is a 3D developer at Taran3d and has undertaken many technological projects related to 3D printing and augmented reality, as well as working with many museums across the UK.
